Creative Corner - Meet Pattymac Knits

I'm so happy to be working with Patty from Pattymac Knits! I've been following her on Instagram for a while (her photos are always gorgeous!), and we recently decided to do some collaborating. Patty's site is full of knitting, recipes and other fun crafts. There really is something for everyone!

Note: This is Part 1 of a 2-part post. I've also added a separate post about Patty's Pom Pom Bunny tutorial. It's so good! You'll want to make a whole basket full of cute little bunnies!

Hi Patty! Tell us a little bit about yourself and where you’re from:

Pattymac KnitsI live in Virginia Beach which is a coastal, boardwalk town with Southern flavor. I love living in a beach town and find the laid back aesthetic suits my personality. Since we are a military town, locals are a rarity. And I’m proud to be a bona fide Local!

What would people be surprised to learn about you?

I have a business degree with a major in accounting! Only the worst possible major for my personality type. I wanted to go to art school and my dad said I had to learn something “useful.” He was a retired military officer, so what he said was the law, and I complied. Though if I had it to do over again, I would have been braver and gone to art school on my own.

What is one of your proudest achievements?

I once created an art show from photos I took in Prague. I booked the show before I took the trip so the pressure to create the images was REAL. This was in 1999 before digital photography. I shot everything for my show on Black and white film and processed all the prints by hand in my home darkroom. I spent an entire summer pulling those prints and getting ready for the show. In the end, I won the Best in Show prize at my school’s annual art show. I am still so proud of that because only very rarely do photos ever take the Best in Show Prize.

When you’re not crafting or working on your shop, what do you like to do?

I absolutely love a good movie! Sneaking out for a midweek matinee always makes me feel like I’m getting away with something just a little bit naughty. Seeing a great movie and then enjoying a delicious early dinner out is my favorite way to spend a day off.

What is your favorite piece of work that you created?

Willie, wearing knitted dog cowlI started knitting my knitting for my dog, Willie. So I am partial to the dog cowls I knitted for him. I still believe they are the first perfect in-the-round knit for a new knitter!

When did you start your business, and what was your motivation?

I started getting interested in blogging in 2011. I started with Tumblr, because I didn’t understand any of it. (Honestly, I still struggle with a lot of the backend parts of having an online business.) I was eliminated from my job and wanted to keep my skills current while looking for work. Only we lived in a rural area at the time, and the recession was very difficult on older people. Long story short, we moved back to Virginia Beach (which took a long time because of the depressed housing market) and I had so much invested in the blogging I wanted to keep going. In fall of 2015 I was selected to appear on Creative Live and that really helped me to get clear on my craft blog. My motivation was, and is to support myself with the blog and my pattern business.

      Describe your workspace:

I have a dedicated office in our smallest bedroom. That’s where I store most of my yarn and have my computer set up. I used my garage as a photo studio and shoot all my video tutorials and styled photos there. It’s not fancy, but it’s mine and I’m grateful for it every single day. Most of my work time is spent on the computer, so having a comfortable office is important to me. I spend far less time on knitting and photography than I would like, but that’s the reality of running an online business created from digital tools.

What are the craft tools/supplies you can’t live without?

Knitted cat hatMore than anything, I have to have my computer or I would be unable craft and operate my business. Second would have to be my camera, because that’s how I share my message. Thirdly, I need plenty of cozy yarn and pretty knitting needles to create new things to share with the world.

Do you have any tips or inspiring words for others?

The biggest thing is you must be determined. And you must be hard headed. If you have those two traits, then you suited for starting and running an online business! And must be willing to see the long term and not get caught up in the day to day highs and lows. It’s a long term game and you have to have patience.

Are you a morning person or a night person?

                Favorite and least favorite food(s):

I am definitely a sweets person! So a favorite is Creme Brûlée and my least favorite would have to be plain, raw broccoli. There’s a reason it’s diet food! Nobody wants to eat it! (Steamed with butter is great! But plain and raw I can skip!)

                  Do you have any pets?

I had a Golden Retriever and a cat, but I lost them both within a month last year. It’s been very hard to deal with emotionally, and I’m still sad about it. We are planning to adopt a cat or two later in the spring. And I’m excited about that. Though I miss my beloved dog so much.
